Just a note Nate, if you work this way you will have problems checking your
project out (existing files) if you start checking in your .project and
.classpath files, which I highly recommend if you have any project
dependencies or a number of developers.

I was able to get this working.  Instead of using "Check out as
Project", I did "Check out as..." and selected Java Project.  After
that it worked fine.
