ok i get the following:

[pokey@pokey mail]$ /usr/sbin/stunnel -c -r localhost:9999
/usr/sbin/pppd: This system lacks kernel support for PPP. This could be
because
the PPP kernel module is not loaded, or because the kernel is
not configured for PPP. See the README.linux file in the
ppp-2.3.5 distribution.

my inetd, conf entry is as follows..

spppd stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/stunnel stunnel -l
/usr/sbin/pppd passive

If I start pppd from a shell i get the ppp header crap... is this error
because there is now tty associated with the connection?

any ideas?
