Well, just take the log entries literally:

 > Aug  7 12:26:35 vpnserver charon: 15[LIB] reading file
 > '/usr/local/etc/ipsec.d/private/strongswanKey.der' failed

charon cannot find the private key file "strongswanKey.der
in the "/usr/local/etc/ipsec.d/private" directory.
