This should have never worked.

As long as this error message stops when the root is mounted for write, 
there is no problem.

I have no clue what the problem is, can you send your /etc/inittab?

My understanding rom-o-matic does etherboot, not PXE. Did you specify 
etherboot in your /etc/clustertab? If not, please do so and run 
cluster_lilo.
