I submitted a support request to SourceForge ("SF") a couple of weeks
ago asking them to resolve this. Today I escalated the issue and finally
got a response. It wasn't a big surprise to find out that we're not the
only project experiencing this problem, and it's partially due to bugs
in the ViewCVS software, which is not under the control of SF.

SF has a master bug report that we can monitor to see when this issue
will be resolved:

http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=614497&group_id=1&atid=200001

Unfortunately, the bug report hasn't been updated in over a year and the
technical support person doesn't know of any workarounds. Sigh...
