I think I discovered the problem.  It's working now.  I found this page
(http://www.linux.ie/pipermail/ilug/2004-June/016197.html) which told me
to set allow-thread-sort and allow-server-sort to false.  Apparently our
IMAP server is configured to not do server side sorting.  When I made
those changes everthing started working.
