Every box we sell runs an async Squid, and we have had no stability 
problems.  One unit has seen at least one crash which we haven't yet 
been able to track down the cause of (it's in a very demanding 
environment with a complicated network topology, including ICP, static 
routes, frame relay clients, and other 'confusers'--which I think 
triggered a race), but given the number of units in the field, one Squid 
crash isn't all that intimidating.
