Looking at the code, there is quite a deal of memory copying going on,
especially at the protocol layer.  Without attempting to read minds, I do
suspect that the authors have been focusing on stability and portability
in recent releases, which I applaud.  That said, I don't find Spread slow.

(I suggest using BSDish mbufs as a packet structure, and *if* I have time,
might write it.)
