Sometimes it's a good idea to use other tools with Spike. If you have a closed source application but you can acquire debug privileges and attach a debugger to it than you can also monitor it's behavior. If this is not possible than maybe you can monitor cpu or memory usage on the device and use it as clues. Another option is to use Spike with similar tools - check out FSMax from Foundstone (Windows systems only). FSMax can be easily used for some testing of closed source web servers.
