Just saw a note about something that may be related to this...

If you upgraded your gcc to version 2.96, it will NOT compile a working
kernel. Stick to the older gcc.

I do not know if this is your problem, but I thought I would let 
people know. It is also noted on linux weekly news in the kernel
section.
