Well,
  As I guessed, nobody has ever really used this stuff.
I have built and installed e2fsprogs-1.10-4, and
dump-0.3-11
  Things are better but still not correct. I can at least CD
around and down a few levels before it blow chunks:

  It generated a buss error and blew out....
The source RPM is NFG as it leaves out (comments out) the
SPARC patch (needed for byte swapping)...amazing.....

  Thought I would just see if it would restore (onto an
empty partition...) it won't:

  Once it screws-up it's gone. Nothing wrong with the original file
it complained about:
> sparky.gencon.com:/usr/bin: >% ls -al c++de*
> -rwxr-xr-x   2 root     root        42308 Aug 26  1996 c++decl

or any of the ones afterwords:

> sparky.gencon.com:/usr/bin: >% ls -al cdplay control-panel 
> lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     root           12 Feb 23 19:38 cdplay -> /usr/bin/cdp
> -rwxr-xr-x   1 root     root         6661 Dec 10  1996 control-panel

  So, you can back your data up but you can't restore it. 

HELLO Red-HAT ????? This is NOT a usable system....

  Anyone got any brilliant ideas ????
