The problem has not reappeared...
If anyone wants to look over anything; I'm available, but don't have the time
now that everthing seems to be working.
I'm using perl-5.10.0 updated to patchlevel 33620 rsync'ed from
public.activestate.com/perl-5.10.x

I wouldn't blame anyone if they mark this as a problem with the original 5.10.0
branch of perl.  But, still would be nice to know for sure what was or is
happening to cause this.
