I agree with mr. Maanen that optimizer hints is not a good solution. And
I really would hate to see other vendors do the same. Imagine what it
would do to a otherwise clean sql-statement when you have multiple
inlined 'optimizer hints' in comments?

I know sybase used statistics to estimate how the optimizer should do
its work. On that platform (sybase 10) you would have to do an 'update
statistics tablename' now and then to ensure optimum performance. But it
worked, as far as I could tell.

A better solution to the problem, would imho be to fix the optimizer
instead of adding ad-hoc solutions like the inline 'hints'.
