I just came across a net5501 that was picky about CF cards too. Sometimes
grub would load, other times i would get "error 5". I found that by
entering "set fastboot enabled" in the bios made the boot process much more
stable for me.

I just tried lilo, and it loads the kernel fine it seems to fail on the initrd:

Initramfs unpacking failed: junk in compressed archive
It then panics and dies. Googling threw up a few suggestions, adding the \
'large-memory' option in lilo.conf didn't change anything and the only \
other suggestion was the partition containing /boot being too large. /dev/sda is a \
large disk but I'm trying to boot the system of a small 4GB compact flash card on \
/dev/sdb.

I currently boot it using grub installed on /dev/sda but I'd like to remove that \
disk at some point.

My lilo.conf is attached. If anyone can suggest something please shout :)
