Thank you for your suggestions. I've tried them all with no result, 
changed something in the template - and voilą everything worked. The 
Smarty-cache has tricked me again :-( What a great feature and what a 
great source of frustration!

Thank you all for trying to help me. The function I posted works as I 
thought.
