yes, this is a bug that Jan Rosier reported recently and that is fixed
in cvs. you can try the cvs version of smarty or grab a daily
cvs-snapshot from http://lammfellpuschen.de/smarty-daily/ .

the snapshots a highly unofficial and i cannot guarantee a lot of
support for that service but it may help people who don't want to
tamper with cvs and also don't want to wait for RC2. BTW: cvs-HEAD is
quite stable at the moment and will stay that until 2.6.0 is released.
