I've been using smartmontools since it added support for 3Ware controllers
on FreeBSD. I've built a new server with 16 2TB WD2003-FYYS drives on a
3Ware 9650SE-16ML controller. The controller firmware is current (9.5.3
release), the drive firmware is also current (the drives are less than a
month old). FreeBSD is 8-STABLE from a few days ago, and smartmontools is
5.39.1.

With that out of the way - when there is very heavy I/O going on (this
means > 500Mbyte/sec to the 9650SE), smartd will report that one or more
drives are not capable of a SMART self-check. For example:

May 18 13:49:47 hostname smartd[7995]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_00], not capable \
                of SMART self-check
May 18 13:49:47 hostname smartd[7995]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_00], failed to \
                read SMART Attribute Data
May 18 13:49:47 hostname smartd[7995]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_00], Read SMART \
                Self Test Log Failed
May 18 13:49:47 hostname smartd[7995]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_00], Read SMART \
                Error Log Failed
May 18 13:49:47 hostname smartd[7995]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_01], not capable \
                of SMART self-check
May 18 13:49:47 hostname smartd[7995]: Device: /dev/twa0 [3ware_disk_01], failed to \
read SMART Attribute Data

I'm guessing this is because the controller is busy enough doing other
stuff that it is either telling smartd "don't bother me", or smartd is
timing out.

I'm looking for suggestions as to where the underlying problem is - either
in the 3Ware firmware, the drive firmware, or in smartd or FreeBSD - rather
than spraying everything in sight with a bug report 8-}

Also, since it may be unlikely to get the problem addressed if it is in
some firmware, can smartd retry the operation after a brief delay, rather
than reporting the error?
