Are any of these block devices? try

	find / -name hda -type b -print

I'm not sure how much of a good idea this is, but you might also try

	# mknod /dev/hda b 3 0
	# smartctl -H /dev/hda

The fact /dev/hda disappears is something I cannot explain, but is
probably key to what is going on here.
