Many thanks for smartmontools.

See
http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/discsales/enterprise/family/1,1086,658,00.html

for the family of drives,

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/scsi/st373454lc.html

http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/manuals/scsi/cheetah_15k4_scsi_pm.pdf
has some SMART details

I'm happy to do debug runs to collect data for you,
and to beta test a new version :-)

1) smartctl doesn't say whether or not this drive is in the db,
and it gives details in a very different format from normal,
in particular omitting these 2 sections:
  General SMART Values:
Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:

2) What does this mean? What kind of errors can increment this count?
Would you put the answer in FAQs please?
  Non-medium error count: 25

3) number of hours powered up = 10583.55 is OK

4) Total uncorrected errors = 0 is incorrect (or very misleading), since;
/var/log/messages has repeated occurrences of:
 Aug 12 08:50:30 opal kernel: scsi1: ERROR on channel 0, id 1, lun 0,
CDB: Read (10) 00 01 6c 17 e1 00 00 08 00

key Medium Error
Aug 12 08:50:30 opal kernel: Additional sense indicates Unrecovered read
