I have a very slow raid5 with a compaq SMART2

I try smartctl -A /dev/ida/c0d0 and get:
Standard Inquiry failed [Invalid argument]
A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or
more '-T permissive' options.

and i try raidutl -L all and it fails.

Sorry im sorta clueless about this. anyone have some tips how to get
the above two programs working or how to just fix my problem

On my raid5 scsi hardware raid:
/dev/ida/c0d0:
readonly     =  0 (off)
readahead    = 128 (on)
geometry     = 13071/255/32, sectors = 106659360, start = 0
Timing use hdparm is 5x slower than results from a sata. Sure, the
machine is p3 1000 and the sata is a p4 2.4G but that shouldnt make
this much of a difference with hdparm -Tt
/dev/ida/c0d0:
Timing cached reads:   924 MB in  2.00 seconds = 462.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:   90 MB in  3.03 seconds =  29.70 MB/sec
VS. the sata on the p4
/dev/hdc:
Timing cached reads:   4148 MB in  2.00 seconds = 2074.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads:  170 MB in  3.01 seconds =  56.48 MB/sec

relevant dmesg entries:
Compaq SMART2 Driver (v 2.4.28)
cpqarray: Device 0x10 has been found at bus 0 dev 1 func 0
cpqarray: Finding drives on ida0 (Integrated Array)
cpqarray ida/c0d0: blksz=512 nr_blks=106659360
cpqarray: Starting firmware's background processing
blk: queue c02e6b20, I/O limit 4095Mb (mask 0xffffffff)
Partition check:
ida/c0d0: p1 < p5 > p2 p3
