Per RFC 3891 section 4, INVITE with Replaces MUST NOT be sent to replace an
early dialog unless the receiver originated the dialog to be replaced.  It
indicates forking as the reason.

David posted the same question to the sip list.  Since there are currently
more replies there, it is potentially better to reply using that thread.
