The Apache server has to proxy traffic to the J2EE server. That can be via
HTTP, or a tunnelling design like AJP w/ Tomcat or Jetty. The client
cannot directly contact the Java server.

That's it. The rest are details that have basically nothing much to do
with Shibboleth.
