I have a subdomain with its own DNS server and MX records (for corporate
reasons)
e.g. subdomain.domain.com
On occasions, I am getting messages back to my postmaster account from the
mail server at domain.com which is denying my relay. I'm not sure why
sendmail would try and send mail via the mail server at domain.com, because
the sendmail server itself should be sending the mail direct.
I can reproduce this by sending a message to a non-existent domain, but it
happens on occasions with correct email addresses.

Any ideas - is there something in sendmail that cascades down the domain
name looking for a mail server, if it can't send itself - or is it just a
case of something in the MX record?

My MX record looks like this:
                MX 10 mail.subdomain.domain.com. ; Primary Mail
Exchanger
                MX 20 mxbackup.myisp.com. ; Backup Mail
Exchanger

Note the . (dot) at the end.

Thanks.

Jim Turnbull
