wasn't there a URL for Books by Users on the SAS site? might be another resource to look at.

For the first part, get Lauren Haworth's "Proc Tabulate By Example" from
SAS Inst.

For the second part, I'm not sure what you mean.  Do you want to know how
to use PROC SQL to get at external databases?  If so, start with the "SAS
SQL Procedure User's Guide, version 8" [also from SAS Inst.]  There are
better
books specifically on SQL, but I haven't seen a really great book on using
Proc SQL.
