The actual length of the filenames is the 39.39 character limitation in
OpenVMS.

You may see file names smaller than that because of the way that SAMBA handles
them. It replaces a VMS illegal character with four characters, consisting of
two underscores followed by the offending character in HEX. This is compatable
with what the Digital Pathworks product does. I believe that it is scanning
from left to right, so the first period would not be translated, but the second
one would be.

The only other easy way of handling longer file names is to use a special file
to store the translation. Since both SAMBA and OpenVMS can manipulate the
files, there is no way to guarantee that the translation file is in sync with
the current directory contents.

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

HI,

While using a non VMS standard character for files in the pc side, The =
samba server uses the "ASCII" translation pattern.
However, it seems like there is a limit on the length of the SERVER =
side's file name length.

Sounds familier ? Any idea how to override ?
