Yeah, absolutely.  I couldn't have done it any other way.  One of the 
measures I took on our systems following the crack-ins we had last year 
was to set the permissions on the compilers to 700 (owned by root). 
While I might have been able to run ./configure as another uid, there 
is no way I would have been able to do the 'make' without being logged 
in as superuser/root.
