Hello!

I would like to inform you all of a small problem i found configuring our
samba server.

It's about the combination of a clustered (multi homed) samba server
using wins servers and the keywords "interfaces" and "bind interfaces
only" and "netbios alias".

This is our setup..

Solaris version is 2.5.1
Samba version is 2.0.6
Cluster software FirstWatch (version number unknown, don't think it matters)
NT wins server.

Two Solaris boxes is clustered. Each of them have 4 ip addresses.
One of them is running the samba service. On that machine the first
address is for accessing the cluster machine. The following two ip
addresses is on a private network, used only to link the machine to
it's cluster partner. The last address is the service ip address.

The last address is the one we want publicly available and registerd
in the wins server. We use the interface keyword to specify this:

interface = 194.123.133.20/24

Then we read the part of the manual concerning "bind interfaces only".
There we get informed that, if we use "bind interfaces only" we should
include the 127.0.0.1 address in our interfaces list. So, we change to

interface = 127.0.0.1 194.123.133.20/24
bind interfaces only = True

This is no good.

The Wins server will store and use the 127.0.0.1 address for our netbios
alias names. (nmblookup shows this.)

In this case, wins seems to handle the netbios name differently from the
netbios alias names. If i connect to the netbios name from NT/win95 etc
i always get the service ip address. Using the netbios alias i sometimes
get 0.0.0.0 from wins. (this information comes from a network dump of
the traffic between a NT client and our wins server. From nmblookup i
see the 127.0.0.1 address.)

Anyway. It would be nice to have a note in the "bind interfaces only"
part of the manual about the dangers of 127.0.0.1 in the interfaces list
when using "bind interfaces only" and "wins server" and
"netbios alias" names.

Best regards			Martin Budsjö
