I tried to build it, and I get this:

hramrach@hp-tc2110:11(0) 06121345 23]~ $ ruby -v
ruby 1.8.6 (2007-06-07 patchlevel 36) [i686-linux]
hramrach@hp-tc2110:11(0) 06121345 24]~ $ ruby -w test.rb
ruby: no such file to load -- auto_gem (LoadError)

I did not apply any patches, just ./configure --prefix=$HOME/ruby ;
make ; make install

I had similar problem with a 1.6.8 snapshot, I had to put an empty
auto_gem.rb somewhere to make it work.
