are you really out of memory or are you hitting a per-process limit?

i have found that most times people think the machine is out of memory,
it isn't really, it's just that their particular login isn't allowed to
gobble more RAM.  the way you change this depends on your system and
shell.  for FreeBSD with tcsh (my combo), you use /etc/login.conf and
the "limit" command of the shell.
