When I attempt to log in to my ubuntu server with winSCP, I recieve the following \
error:

Cannot initialize SFTP protocol. Is the host runing a SFTP server
Connection has been unexpectedly closed. Server sent command exit status 1.

The cause of the error is noted in my syslog for the server:

Dec 27 10:08:41 localhost rssh[7344]: setting log facility to LOG_USER
Dec 27 10:08:41 localhost rssh[7344]: setting umask to 022
Dec 27 10:08:41 localhost rssh[7344]: execv failed: cmd line \
/usr/lib/openssh/sftp-server

This does not make sense however as the file exists and the permissions are OK:

root@tux:/usr/lib/openssh# ls -l
total 168
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root   8452 2005-10-10 13:11 gnome-ssh-askpass
-rwxrwxrwx  2 root root  27184 2005-10-10 13:11 sftp-server
-rwsr-xr-x  1 root root 127772 2005-10-10 13:10 ssh-keysign

as well as in the chroot environment:

root@tux:/home/gonella/lib/openssh# ls -l
total 28
-rwxr-xr-x  1 root root 27184 2005-12-27 11:15 sftp-server

And the config file (/etc/rssh.conf) is properly written:

# This is the default rssh config file

# set the log facility. "LOG_USER" and "user" are equivalent.
logfacility = LOG_USER

# Leave these all commented out to make the default action for rssh to lock
# users out completely...

allowscp
allowsftp
#allowcvs
#allowrdist
#allowrsync

# set the default umask
umask = 022

# If you want to chroot users, use this to set the directory where the root of
# the chroot jail will be located.
#
# if you DO NOT want to chroot users, LEAVE THIS COMMENTED OUT.
# You can quote anywhere, but quotes not required unless path contains a
# space... as in this example.

chrootpath = "~/"

And yes, I am running the latest version of rssh. I had to compile it myself as the \
ubuntu repos are out of date (i'm going to file a bug report soon)

Does anyone have any idea why rssh might be erroring out in this way?
