Yes, sometimes the env var was all that was needed and other times a
reboot of the system was also needed.  I wasn't the one dealing with
this though, so I don't know all the details.  I do know that in our
case we were trying to back port the RHEL 3 kernel to RH9, and that is
when we saw the issues.
