mv ~/.kde ~/kde

Try it again. If it works, get rid of the kde dir that you just renamed.

If it doesn't work, I dunno. Might I suggest a much easier to deal with
(resource-wise) wm like, say, xfce or icewm? In icewm you can even make
all of the kde and gnome stuff available and still keep memory and CPU
usage in line.

The downside, if renaming the .kde dir works, is you'll lose any
settings you had in the original. The upside is, it works and you can
rebuild it (minus whatever caused the error).
