  This thread highlights one of the major shortcomings of email,
being text only it does not transmit any of the tone or voice, facial
expression or other body language that we normally use in personal
converstation.   Also, it's all too easy to forget that there is a
living, breathing human being with his/her own set of sensibilities
on the receiving end.

 Fortunately, there is a very simple solution.  The lubrication for
social intercourse simply involves the liberal use of the word
please.

  Notice, please,  how the harsh imperative, "Be specific" is
softened and made more acceptable by adding in one word, "Please be
specific".   More wordy, but even better is, "I'd appreciate it if
you'd be specific, please", clearly transforming an unintended order
into a personal request.
