cool, thanks for the tip but i'm still doing something wrong.  here's what my 
client ntp.conf's look like:

[root@semaphore root]# cat /etc/ntp.conf
restrict default ignore
restrict 127.0.0.1
server  192.168.1.100
driftfile /etc/ntp/drift
broadcastdelay  0.008
authenticate no

but it doesn't seem to work:

[root@semaphore root]# ntpq -p
     remote           refid      st t when poll reach   delay   offset  jitter
==============================================================================
 criticalsection 0.0.0.0         16 u    -  512    0    0.000    0.000 4000.00

well, i know it doesn't work cuz "rsh criticalsection date; date" shows 
drastically different times after the puters have been up for a couple of 
days.
