   Sorry for the delay, but here is the code segment from
   fsck.c/redhat/srpms/4.1

   if fs is not inited, then fs will contain anything that was left over in
   the stack. For the alpha port, there seems seems to be some leftover
   stack data to give fs an initial, albeit bogus, value.
   I dont know if this is the LATEST, its just whats being distrib'ed

Redhat is distributing the latest version of e2fsprogs in their Redhat
4.2 distribution......

The problem has been fixed in the latest version.
