Others have given you good answers. Yes to tape, no to VSAM. IBM-MAIN more on-topic.

Don't know if anyone else pointed out that SMF 14 and 15 are for input and output \
datasets, respectively, not OPEN and CLOSE. AFAIK, there is no SMF record that tracks \
OPENs. (Although RACF audit and SMF 80 come fairly close.)
