Hello
thank you Brian. Yes, you are right, I should have looked in the help  
files first.
Anyway, I installed rgdal on my mac using:

 > install.packages('rgdal', configure.args='--with-gdal-config=/ 
Library/Frameworks/GDAL.Framework/Unix/bin/gdal-config --with-proj- 
include=/Library/Frameworks/PROJ.framework/unix/include-with-proj-lib=/ 
Library/Frameworks/PROJ.framework/unix/lib/',dependencies=TRUE,  
type="source", repos = NULL)

and the library loaded!
So all good!
