Hi Carl,
1) Yes, Mac OS says R is not responding. But it's just being busy, it will
respond again later.

2) No, I tend to download from the graphical user's interface that is
provided under the Mac environment. Otherwise, I have also used biocLite()
from the command line. In most cases you may not need to download the
package manually.
