At http://gifi.stat.ucla.edu/R/builds you will find

-rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 6269465 Nov 12 11:41
R-1.3.1-MacOSX-base.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 26897855 Nov 12 12:04
R-1.3.1-MacOSX-full.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root staff 3056494 Nov 12 11:59
R-1.3.1-MacOSX-recommended.tar.gz

The "base" file contains the (patched) R-base distribution, unpack in
/usr/local. The "recommended" file contains recommended packages,
unpack in /usr/local/lib/R/library. The "full" file contains up-to-date
versions of 160 packages, also unpack in /usr/local/lib/R/library. I
think
these files should replace the older ones at CRAN.

This build uses the newest versions of f2c, ATLAS, dlcompat, tcl/tk,
xfree86, and
so on, all from fink.sourceforge.net. It is suitable for MacOS X 10.1,
i.e. for
Darwin 5.1.

Also at http://gifi.stat.ucla.edu/R/builds you will find the build
directories
for R-devel and R-patched, and at http://gifi.stat.ucla.edu/R/dylibs you
can find the missing dylibs R may complain about. Problems to me.
