gridDistance seems to do the trick for me.  I haven't seen anything in gdis=
tance that could help me but I could be wrong.

As for GRASS, I'll have to get into it one day.  This thing looks powerful,=
 but it's pretty much just a name for me so far...

 Failing all that, I'm pretty sure GRASS GIS has the functionality to
do this.  I think there's a package to ease working with R and GRASS
if rgdal isn't sufficient for data transfer...
