"Scan" does not currently accept mode "complex".  (Splus3.4 does).
The help file does not make plain the intention.
Version is 0.632.

yy_scan("testfile1",what=complex()) 

print(yy)
print(mode(yy))

# Says: Error: "scan" invalid "what=" specified
# yy_as.complex(scan("testfile1",what=character())) # workaround
