Thanks for all the advice, I have submitted the bug, I see one other person has also reported it.  I will try Sitecopy as it looks good. I think I will also get hold of Konqueror too as it may help with stability.

Cheers,
Susan

This mostly works for me - it's loading the classes (and methods) out of my
included files, it just misses some of them.  Is the only way to refresh the
cache to reload the project?  (assuming there is a cache).

This will be awesome.  I look forward to it! :)

what exactly do you mean "crashes Ubuntu"?
what protocol does the upload site use, and does it work in konqueror?

1) the screen goes black shows some text and then I get my login window.

2) The site uses FTP and the same settings work fine in both filezilla or
Kompozer. I do not use Konqueror I have Ubuntu and use Firefox.

I have several sites set up now to upload but I can't trust the upload to
web button at all, occasionally it has given me the menu so I can choose the
pages and then it uploads quickly like a dream however yesterday it crashed
- see above and then I opened Quanta and tried again and it crashed again.
It is a bit of a pain but I'm having to do the work in Qunata and then go
across to Filezilla  to upload it - unless there is a bug fix I do not have
the time to keep re loging in and having to open all my software each time.

Thanks for any advice (I am an advanced user but not a programmer but I can
follow instructions)

Susan

oh. No application should be able to do that. I can't help you on this, sorry.

Hi,

I think you should look at maybe placing a bug report with Ubuntu, they are
the ones who compiled your installation of Quanta, and will be the only ones
who can begin to try to sort it it out.

http://www.ubuntu.com/community/reportproblem

This is not a process of fobbing you off, it's just that in the GNU/Linux
world, this is the way that things happen. It's unlikely that anyone on this
list will be able to answer your specific problem (unless they're the Debian
or Ubuntu Quanta package maintainer).

The point being, that Ubuntu derive their packaging from Debian who take it
from the individual projects and adapt stuff to work together as the Debian
GNU/Linux distribution.  Ubuntu of course also make changes themselves, so
this is where you should start.  If the problem arises further upstream then
Ubuntu will pass it on to Debian, who themselves may pass information onto
Quanta or some other project if they themselves did not originate the
problem.

The "other project" stuff may be an issue here, since the operating system is
complex, the problem could well have nothing to do with Quanta at all.

As Niko said, an application can not crash your window manager/desktop
environment - it sounds like a bug with that...

The reason Konqueror is suggested is because KDE applications all use
KIO slaves to do work with files, this way we can be transparently
working over ftp, sftp, ssh (fish), http, or local files, without the
application having to write its own protocol handler.  If ftp works in
Konqueror, and not in Quanta, then there is something wrong with the way
Quanta is handling the kio slave, else if they both crash, then it would
be a bug with the kio slave.  You could try Kate or kwrite or any other
kde application that supports your protocol, just to test this
functionality.
And Konqueror is a most excellent advanced file manager that can work on
remote files just as well as local, not just a browser...

To check if it is a problem with a config file, you could try to rename
the quanta config file from ~/.kde/share/config/quantarc - it contains
all the settings changes for quanta.  Re-naming lets you copy it back if
need be.
You might also want to re-create the project, as it could be a setting
in there causing problems...
But I do think it is unrelated to Quanta, because your desktop
environment should not crash, due to an application playing up

Also provide version number of Quanta and KDE - in Quanta, go to
help->about and post the Quanta and KDE versions

Oh, and on the website updating issue.  You really should not be forced to use
programmes like filezilla et al.

Personally, I don't use the site updater in Quanta very much as I prefer to
use other methods.

If you are using ftp to update your website, then you should have a look at
the excellent little utility "sitecopy".  You can install it through aptitude
using the following command:

apitude install sitecopy

You can of course also use whatever gui packagemanager you wish, just
remembering the name is "sitecopy".

### Description from the sitecopy man page ###
sitecopy  is for copying locally stored web sites to remote web servers.  A
single command will upload files to the server which have changed locally,
and  delete  files  from  the server  which  have  been  removed  locally, to
keep the remote site synchronized with the local site.  The aim is to remove
the hassle of uploading and  deleting  individual  files using  an  FTP
client.  Sitecopy will also optionally try to spot files you move locally,
and move them remotely.

I would tend to agree, which is even more reason for Susan to take it up with
Ubuntu.

I have been using Quanta happily for several years with Ubuntu and Kubuntu
with no issues.  Be sure to bear in mind the differences between the two - I
bet this turns out to be a Ubuntu/Kubuntu difference - a flaw in install
dependencies due to the fact that bits of the KDE environment get installed
to allow Quanta to run in a primarily Gnome environment.
