Thanks for your reply. The above paragraph contains the key I needed to 
solve the mistery.

I've got a couple of other KDE apps and indeed the problem repeats on 
them too.

Then I started wondering what I could have possibly done to cause this.

I remember that in Ubuntu's Language Support (System >> Administration 
 >> Language Support) there's an Entry Mode option that enables support 
to complex characters. It used to be turned off but this weekend I 
turned it on to see what happens. I could never imagine it'd cause 
Quanta (or KDE apps) to stop accentuating characters when turned on. 
Strange.
