Chris,
It's hard for me to check, since I'm using the fully split ebuilds but it just 
occurred to me that you may need to emerge kdenetwork (nother meta-ebuild) to 
get the ssh (can you ssh to the server?) and perl scripts that fish uses.  
kdenetwork would be overkill but otherwise you'd need to migrate to split 
ebuilds.
