Thanks Carl, I didn't see it. In the meantime I found this link

http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/faq.php#reset_layout

which recommended using the --resetlayout command line switch. It also
mentioned ~/.kde3.5/share/config/quantarc. Who would have thought to
look for an "rc" file for configuration options ;-/
