SMTP-AUTH is neither a bug-fix nor a compatibility update.

Wait, so, you're wanting *outbound* authentication? Or do you want 
your clients to use SMTP-AUTH to submit messages to the queue?

They are almost entirely compatible. Netqmail's source code is not 
much different from qmail's (it is, as a matter of fact, merely 
qmail's source plus a few small patches).
