Anyone stumbled over this one?

We have a customer that we send mail to via a Maildir and a peridoc
call to maildirsmtp.

Due to a configuration error with the customer a message has looped and
the erroneous script on customer side mangled the envelope sender,
inserting double quotes and doubled all backslashes before reinjecting.
The envelope sender address length grew rather fast and reached a
inacceptable size faster than the hop count detection detected the loop
(2^n is fast ;).

The situation then was that maildirsmtp hit an error:

    maildirserial: info: new/1110808215.18509.newsletter.example.com bounced:
	10.0.0.1 said: 555 syntax error (#5.5.4)

so far so good. Bad thing is the immediately following:

    maildirserial: warning: unable to bounce
	new/1110808215.18509.newsletter.example.com: qq failed:
envelope address too long for qq (#5.1.3)

which caused the faulty message to remain in the Maildir :(

All this wouldn't be too bad ;-) but we ended up with some 1000 messages in
queue/intd + queue/mess (none in todo or local/remote) that look like they
were caused by the above failure. The mess files contain:

Subject: failure notice

Hi. This is the maildirbounce program at newsletter.example.com.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following
address.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

<bestellung@example.com>:

Looks like the files failed to be cleaned up by qmail-clean(?), however
neither of the logfiles contains any errors related to that issue besides
the ones listed above.

Before I start to wade through some large number of code lines in a
qmail area I have never touched before ;-) has anybody seen this happen?
ideas? fixes?

We use a qmail-todo setup, but I doubt that the problem is with that,
as the logfiles don't show anything for "msg 82179" like a "new", so
qmail-send/qmail-todo never saw it.

TIA,
	\Maex
