Thanks for your interest in my problem. I solved it an hour or so after 
posting my message. I converted the data to csv format and also created 
a csvt file. But most importantly, I deselected the shapefile layer 
(i.e. I removed the tick in the box). The field I wanted to display 
became visible then. As the thing to do, it's incredibly obvious now, 
but was not obvious when I was studying the tutorial material.
