Hi Joe,

Correct, the images you reference do not have any coordinates with them.

You'll need to georeference them with them using the coordiates in the Readme.pdf
Georeferencer is in Raster:Georeferencer:Georeferencer

The top left point is 0,0
The bottom right point is 216000,-216000

Note also west and south need to be entered as negative.

You can find the Plate Carree projection by searching in the CRS selection dialogue. \
(It's EPSG:32662)

They're big images, so it's a processor intensive.

If your area of interest is near an image boundary, then Alex's VRT suggestion is \
very helpful. (Raster:Miscellaneous:Build Virtual Raster (Catalog) )

Hope that's helpful.

-ramon.

Subject:[Qgis-user] Using Nasa's Visible Earth images with Qgis

 Hello,
 -Joe

I would like to download Nasa's Visible Earth images then load them
into Qgis and then use the Clipper command to clip out rectangular
portions with specific latitude/longitude boundaries. The Nasa images
are available here: http://visibleearth.nasa.gov/view.php?id=74218.
The problem I am having is that the images come into Qgis without the
proper geographic coordinates. The Nasa documentation says that the
images are in the Plate Carree projection and the projection datum is
WGS84. But with my very limited knowledge of map projections I do not
know how to set this up in Qgis so that the images will be positioned
properly and use decimal degrees as their units. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

 Thanks,
 -Joe
