There's one typo in nowonder's patch.  Here's a fixed version of the patch (unified). \
This compiles but doesn't link.  I can't tell if this is caused by a problem with the \
purify stub libraries.

Meta note: because this is a commercial product which it seems no one has access to \
                anymore, should we continue to support it in the standard \
                distribution?

Since no-one can test this, let's be conservative and not check it in.
There's no absolute requirement to move *everything* to ANSI.
Since we know the old version worked, we should leave it alone.
I vote to keep this in the distribution -- maybe someone else can use it.

If someone else can confirm that it in fact works (or make it work) I'd be happy to \
                accept the patch at that point.
